09/04: Phillips' Season is Over

This is not something we need right now:

Andy Phillips' troubled season has been dealt another bad break. The Yankees first baseman suffered a fractured pisiform bone in his right wrist and will have season-ending surgery on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old Phillips was hit by a Jason Hammel fastball in the fifth inning of the Yankees' 8-2 loss to the Devil Rays on Sunday. Phillips remained in the game to run the bases but did not come out for the next inning in the field.

I'm not as concerned with Phillips as I am with Roger Clemens. His injury is much more costly then Phillips. Plus we have Shelley Duncan and Doug Mientkiewicz to replace Phillips. We don't have anyone to replace Roger unless we put Joba in the rotation. Your thoughts?

I think that Phillips was making some solid contributions to this team. He was hitting .315 with runners in scoring position and offered us the best defense at the position that we have, I think.

But, since we do have Betemit (and Giambi and Duncan, even), I agree that Clemens injury could be more costly. Hopefully, he won't be out for a long time - 1 start tops. If he doesn't, we'll need to get some decent spot starts out of a guy or two or blow up the scoreboard offensively.

Mussina would be Clemens' replacement since he was recently dropped from the rotation. Honestly as bad as Mussina has been over the last month or so, having him make two or three more starts this season in place of a guy who has struggled himself in his last few outings (save the game vs. Boston) really isn't the end of the world.
