10/04: Catching Up with Kevin Maas
Posted by: Patrick
Joseph links to a nice piece on Kevin Maas by Anthony McCarron at the Daily News.
"There was some good, some bad and some ugly," Maas says now about his career. "Like life. Should I have had a 10-year career, 20 or 30 homers a year? It is what it is. I played 11 years of pro ball and at 33, the end, my bat was getting slower and I had trouble staying healthy. There were a lot of influences pointing me to move on and I wasn't afraid to."

Jim Baumbach of Newsday points to a blog post written by Mark Mussina, Mike Mussina's brother. In it, he says:
Before I get to playoff match-ups, I want to say thank you for all the kind words regarding Mike’s season, and that I really don’t know what he is going to do next year. I think he was mentally prepared to retire, but after doing so well, and knowing how close the Hall of Fame is (some people think he’s in already, but who knows) I think it’s going to be hard to walk away. At this point, that’s all I will say about Mike.

ESPN.com's Buster Olney says that he's heard that the Yankees payroll will down to the $180 million dollar range in 2009. This would be a drop of about $29 million, according to MLB Trade Rumors. The team has around $75 million in veteran salary coming off of the books, thanks to expiring contracts.

10/01: Cashman Speaks
Posted by: Patrick
Kat O'Brien and Peter Abraham have quotes and audio from Brian Cashman's press conference and WFAN's Mike Francesa had him on the air today (via Mike).
Among other things, he said that he's looking for Matsui to be the DH, Damon to be in the outfield, Posada to be the catcher and a dedicated first baseman. He also said that he expects Joba to be a starter and to hold down a rotation spot (Wang and Joba are the only pitchers being penciled into the rotation).

09/30: Cashman Returning to Yankees
Posted by: Seamus
According to Newsday, the Yankees and Brian Cashman have agreed to a three-year extension that will keep Cashman as the Yankees' general manager through at least the 2011 season. The article posts official releases from both Cashman and Hank and Hal Steinbrenner.
From Cashman:
The Steinbrenners' statement:
I think it's the right move. Overall I think he's done a good job and there aren't too many alternatives to consider.
From Cashman:
"I know I've said it before, but it's an incredible opportunity and honor to hold the title of general manager for the New York Yankees. With it comes a great responsibility to ownership, the people who wear the uniform and our fan base."
The Steinbrenners' statement:
"Before we could move forward as an organization this off-season, we needed to come to a resolution on the person who would hold the important position of general manager and allow us to make another run at a 27th World Championship. We are thrilled that Brian has accepted to renew his commitment to this organization for at least three more years."
I think it's the right move. Overall I think he's done a good job and there aren't too many alternatives to consider.
09/29: Rivera to Have Surgery
Posted by: Patrick
Bryan Hoch reports that Mo has opted to have arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder. I'm no doctor, but this sounds like the right move to me. Get it cleaned up in the offseason to help prevent an ongoing issue that could affect him next season.

The 2008 Yankees Bloggers Fantasy Baseball League has come to it's conclusion. Our winner is Aziz Nekoukar from Pride of the Yankees. He defeated Dan of Pinstripes, Pa. by the score of 10-0. Way to run up the score, Aziz. Such a mean spirited, nasty guy. Has to kill us all in the regular season and then treat Dan this way, on top of it all. Just kidding. Aziz couldn't be nicer. Congrats to him.
